How do passkeys work?
Passkeys are a new technology that allows you to securely sign in to websites without a password.
You use device-native biometrics such as Face ID, Touch ID, Windows Hello, or the Android fingerprint reader, but your biometrics never leave your device.
For iPhones and iPads on iOS 16, passkeys are synced via iCloud so you can quickly log in from any device.
On other devices, passkeys are tied to a specific browser and Passage handles the cross-device connections.
Register and log in to websites in seconds - no passwords to remember or two factor codes to find.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are passkeys?
A passkey allows you to log into a website using the methods you use to log into your device, such as FaceID, TouchID, the Android fingerprint reader, Windows Hello, and more. When you visit a website you will be prompted for a PIN, face or fingerprint instead of a password. Behind the scenes, your device is generating a cryptographic signature that is sent to the website. Your biometric data always stays secure on your device.
Do I have a passkey?
Probably! If you have a smartphone that has FaceID, TouchID, the Android fingerprint reader, or Windows Hello, you have a passkey. If you use a PIN on your smartphone or even on your laptop, those can also be used to support passkeys.
What if I don’t have an iPhone?
Apple is at the forefront of building passkeys that can be synced between devices (via your iCloud account), but you can get a similar experience on any biometric-compatible device with Passage. When a device does not have a biometric reader or PIN enabled, Passage falls back to a text or email link, so users on any device can access their accounts.
Is passwordless authentication secure and private?
Signature-based authentication is way more secure that passwords! This may not be immediately obvious, but it is VERY hard for an attacker to get access to.
Can I share accounts with my family?
Yes! Apple supports sharing passkeys between iCloud accounts. When you share a passkey with someone else, they will be able to seamlessly log in to the website from any device that has their iCloud account on it.
