Frequently Asked Questions
What is the definition of monthly active users (MAUs)?
When it comes to pricing, “monthly active users” are end users who register or sign in to your product via Passage in a given month. Users who do not sign in using Passage during that month are excluded. For example, if you have 100,000 total users, but only 70,000 sign in to their account using Passage during the month of June, then you will only be billed for 70,000 monthly active users for that month.
Do Passage customers or end-users have to have the 1Password app?
Passage and 1Password are separate product lines and can be deployed independently. Passage customers and their end users do not need the 1Password apps to sign into services that use Passage products for authentication.
Why implement Passage instead of building a custom solution?
Building and maintaining a passwordless authentication solution that supports all systems and devices, while also handling fallbacks and account recovery is challenging. While WebAuthn is an open standard that developers can use to build passkey logins from scratch, there are significant technology hurdles to overcome with this approach.
Passage products combine WebAuthn components, back-end infrastructure, and pre-built UI elements into a full-stack solution so you can implement best-in-class login experiences with just a few lines of code.
When will Passkey Complete and Passkey Flex be out of beta?
Both Passage products are currently in beta, however, we anticipate they will be released to General Availability in Q4 of 2023. This may change based on market and user feedback.
How does Passage ensure availability and scalability of the authentication service?
Authentication is a mission critical service, and at 1Password we take this seriously. All of the Passage infrastructure is configured for high availability across multiple availability zones, and we’ve worked hard to ensure that our infrastructure will scale to meet any requirements. In order to further ensure availability, we’ve set default rate limits of 100 RPS per Passage application. If you’d like to discuss higher rate limits, please contact us.
